X5005. To Ey. from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} C. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.6/KT. 8.6.32. LOCATION OF 25 HP. ENGINE. Referring to your discussion with E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} yesterday 7th inst. with regard to the fore and aft location of the 25 HP. engine. This matter has come to our attention from the fact that the rear engine feet of Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}'s car 17.G.IV. became solid. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} complained of the roughness of the engine. We understand that the following modifications are being done to prevent this metallic contact at the rear engine feet :- (a) The end clearance for the front engine mounting to be reduced to that of P.2. (b) Locations made for the front bearing arms to the crankcase. These are now a friction grip. (c) The clearance for the distance piece in the rear engine foot to be increased to allow for crankcase expansion. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} suggested that the engine foot should be fitted up in the erecting bay so that there is more clearance for the distance piece to the rear of the chassis than to the front. This is to allow for the engine foot going towards the rear of the chassis when the crankcase expands. Although we have run 20,000 miles in France with the engine mounting exactly similar to the present production, we suggest that in view of the conditions of 17.G.IV. that these modifications should be carried out where possible on all chassis without spring plates on the rear engine feet. This means all chassis after 180 in 'T' series. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/I. A.{Mr Adams} Leslie. | ||
