Dear Mr. Hives, Many thanks for your letter of the 31st ult. The question of noise on the S.U. Carburetter is a bit of a problem as we find that the same type carburetter will be comparatively quiet on one engine and on another downright noisy. I think, however, there is no doubt that generally speaking the noise comes from air passing across sharp edges, and doubtless radiusing off all these would improve matters. The majority of the noise comes from air passing across the piston, and one of the reasons, of course, that it is so noisy on acceleration is the high air speed through the choke at low engine speeds. You will understand that to radius off all these ends would add too much to the cost from our point of view, but I should very much appreciate it if you would let me have any information you get through research at your end. Your remarks regarding spring loading the piston are also of interest. If I can be of any assistance to you in the future, I do hope you will not fail to ask me. Kind regards. Yours sincerely, TCSkinner | ||
