7th October, 1940.

Messrs. The Avon Rubber Co., Ltd.,
MELKSHAM, Wiltshire.

Attention Dr. J.G. Mackay.

Dear Sirs,

We are returning to you under separate cover four of the special 6.50 x 16 tyres with experimental tread compounds which you sent to us for test on 1st May, 1940.

These four covers are now worn out and have completed the following mileages:-

Tyre No. KE.8128 N.S.R. }
" " "8150 O.S.R. } Chassis 12.B.V. 4972 miles

" " "9120 N.S.R. }
" " "8122 O.S.R. } Chassis 9.B.V. 3786 "

The reason for the difference in the mileage of the two pairs is probably that chassis 9.B.V. weighs about 1 1/2 cwt. more and has a better performance than 12.B.V.

We will return the remaining four covers when they are worn out.

With reference to our complaint of squealing with your tyres, we wish to make a careful test and select a pair of tyres which we know to be bad in this respect before sending them to you. Owing to the present situation we have not yet been able to do this test, but hope the opportunity may arise soon. The worn tyres we are returning to you did not squeal badly.

Yours faithfully,
