BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ---- BENTLEY BEARINGS. I have grave doubts that the method of fitting the bearings in their respective housings, as carried out by the Works, will still be a potential cause of failure. Although the interference fit has been improved, the method of pressing the shell into the housing is not all to be desired. I have taken this matter up with RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} who is in agreement with me that the tools used are not giving the desired effect. Meanwhile, I would strongly urge that a total nip of .004 should be adopted until improved tools are available. We have at Kingsbury as an experiment left a total of .016 and pressed this in without ill effects, the only difference being that no labour hours was used to bed the shells in the housings. It is of utmost importance with Hall's metal without a steel backing to get it as solid as is possible in the housing. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W.
