-4- He/Lov.{Mr Lovesey}1/AD26.Z.32 contd. We discussed direct fuel injection but I could not tell whether they were doing any work in this direction. They were, however, anxious to know if we were taking any interest in it. They have experimented with Nitriding cylinders and various parts but have met with little success. In talking to Mr. Siddeley he said they had gained far more useful experience from their engines operating on various commercial air services than from engines in the Air Force. The regularity of duty and need for all round economy of the former had yielded useful data. He also stated the advantage they got in being able to air test their own engines and installation. They are also trying to develop a standardised form of cowling, complete with Townend ring as part of the engine unit. The whole unit can then be bench tested and be sent out complete. I extended to Major Green the invitation of Nor. and Fg. to pay a visit to our works which he said he would be very pleased to accept and would have the opportunity to do so in about a fortnight's time.
