Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG. 5th January, 1924 (Saturday) Messrs Rolls-Royce Limited, Nightingale Road, DERBY. Dear Sirs, We duly received your letter of the 1st inst., and are interested in your report of the material you mention. We quite appreciate the absence of squeaking with this class of lining, since nearly all materials, very hard in character with a low friction value, are invariably silent when other fabrics having a higher coefficient of friction may, under certain conditions, produce a momentary squeak. We know the material quite well, in fact, we originated and patented it. What you are referring to is merely a copy of our Ferobestos and it is a direct infringement of our patent. There is a small difference in making it up, as ours is either made of disintegrated asbestos fibre or woven material, bonded with an insoluble ingredient; theirs is made up by wrapping asbestos yarn round a mandrel and fixing it with exactly the same type of material we were the first to use and to patent the use of. It is perfectly safe to say that it has nothing like the wearing qualities of Ferobestos; under exactly the same conditions of work our lining would shew as much as three to 1 difference in our favour, and if you have found it reasonably good, you would get entire satisfaction from Ferobestos. You have, of course, had considerable quantities of this class of lining for your cars, but we understand, for various reasons which are not quite clear to us, that you abandoned its use in favour of our die-pressed Ferodo Bonded Asbestos. Where scoring of drums occurs we invariably offer Ferobestos as a specific cure, but these cases are WE ARE EXHIBITING AT THE SCOTTISH MOTOR SHOW 1924 KELVIN HALL JAN 25 GLASGOW to FEB 2 | ||
