ALUMINIUM BRAKE DRUMS - BENTLEY.

Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} has asked me to answer your Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}18/E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 14.4.37., which I had kept for him on his return from America.

With regard to aluminium drums, we are not yet in a position to standardise them. We have not yet found a satisfactory solution to the crackling noises which have occurred on the majority of the drums we have so far made.

We think we have at last discovered the reason for the crackling, and we are getting some more experimental drums made, which we hope will overcome it. These will be fitted to the next car going to France.

We do not think that we have yet collected sufficient information on the value of aluminium drums for the prevention of squeaking, nor have we got enough information on the wear of inserted liners to put these drums on production. Aluminium drums must, therefore, be considered still to be in the development stage. As we are committed to them for Wraith, we are endeavouring to perfect them as soon as possible.
