DESIGN WORK & PATENTS.

I have been slowing up on design work for a short time in the hope of getting better in health. This plan has been a considerable success, and I hope to go ahead again shortly. In the meantime I think WW. has not done badly in producing something for future cars, although we have failed to make any progress on the compression ignition work.

I hope BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} has the following schemes fairly well protected, to last for about 4 years:

(1) SEMI-EXPANDING CARBURETTER.

This has not been done by anyone in quite the same way previously to our attempt as far as we know. I need not repeat all the special features, but it mainly consists of a fixed carburetter up to about half the capacity, and an expanding carburetter the other half. In expanding the carburetter we give not only extra air in such a way as to give a central core of fuel surrounded by the air, but we give extra fuel in the main diffuser jet. We do this in conjunction with throttle edge carburation and our double piston type of air chamber. The needle valve need never touch the sides of the measuring orifice, and so there should be no wear of the gauge needle.

As all the parts below the expanding half are stationary the permanence of the setting should be absolutely reliable.

One can easily see that possibly this scheme is better than anything previously produced. It is probable that when it has been redesigned a few times it will be quite passably simple, and a great deal more convenient than double carburetters, which appears to be the only thing that can approach it on a 6 cyl. engine.

(2) SHOCK DAMPERS.

This item has been slowly evolved at WW. with the help of the Derby Expl. Dept. and should now be within sight of becoming one of the most reliable and permanent shock dampers.

It has a single valve which is more capable of control etc than those fitted with 2, 3, and 4, valves.
