Gentlemen:

We are in receipt of your letter of October 12, 1934, in regard to the possible use of the Cone type worm gear in connection with a proposed overhead camshaft.

With regard to the center distance which would be required in utilizing Cone gears, please be advised that it would be necessary for us to have the speed and horsepower requirement in order to determine the size. We would assume from the application, that the worm in each case would be operating at crankshaft speed. Assuming further, that the horsepower would be only that required to operate the overhead cam mechanism, it is believed that the size of the gear sets could be considerably smaller than 3-1/2".

It is unfortunate that we are situated so far from your plant, as this makes the question of working out your problem, a difficult one. We have no licensee in England as yet and would appreciate it very much if you would recommend some firm which in your judgment, would be suitable to handle this line of work.

The ratios, which we assume must be held exactly 1 to 1 and 2 to 1, present a more or less difficult manufacturing problem in connection with the Cone type worm gear. The very small ratios necessarily mean worms having a very large number of threads. The presence of a large number of threads in any type of gear, presents quite a problem in
