To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X4255 R8/G7.9.21. X.4255 - RE GOSHAWK II. PROPELLER SHAFT. You will see by the memo. to Mr. Hives that we consider it is the vacuum which is pulling out the oil from the rear bearing covers, and we do not think that an inside felt would be of any use. It would have to be larger than the outside one, which is not practical. It would also cost money. If there is any pumping action round this corner it will either pump water in or throw oil out, so we must stop it pumping, and the only way to do this appears to be to destroy the vacuum.
