re Chassis 118-MC. Bt{Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer}'s Car.

With reference to the attached memo BJ9/E30.6.26 and report Bt{Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer}6/PN{Mr Northey}/23/6/26 referred to therein, I give you below my comments on the various points raised, and dealt with in the order appearing in Bt{Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer}'s report. When considering a report such as this, it cannot of course be overlooked that, compared with the ordinary customer Bt.{Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer} has "inside" information regarding the weaknesses of the chassis.

(a) Continuous bumping of front axle on buffers when traversing rough roads. The springs now fitted to this car are stronger than originally fitted, as stated, and are, proportionately to the rear springs, stronger than our usual practice. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} agrees that a certain amount of bumping on the front buffers over the type of roads found abroad is to be expected, and is unavoidable. The alternative is stiffer springs which will make worse riding, or more buffer clearance which will reduce the reliability.

(b) Shocks on Steering wheel. This car is fitted with the latest type steering.

(1) Squeaking brakes. This point was referred to in a previous report (Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}9/T31.8.25) as follows:-

"We do not experience brakes squeaking during the test of new cars, but it is a feature which is present on Experimental Cars + and Trials Cars. that have been in use for some time. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} agrees to this, but at the moment is not in a position to give any information as to how it can be overcome"

(2) Tappet Knocks.

(3) Exhaust blows.

(4) Side and tail lamp circuit.

(5) Poor slow running.

We have so far had no report from Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} on these items, but we have asked him to supply one, and we can then report further.
