COPY. J.D.38. 8.11.29. X.4622. X.7530. GROUPED INSTRUMENT BOARD ASSEMBLY. Mr. Dakin of the Test Dept. has informed me that they have a lot of trouble with the Elliott ammeter due to sticking of the needle. The grouped instrument boards are assembled in Mr. Ellis's bay. I do not consider the arrangement to be ideal for this work as there is too much dust in the atmosphere for the open instruments which are used. In the next bay to Mr. Ellis are the aluminium dashboard fettlers and a grindstone is continuously running. The fettlers benches are back to back with a low partition between, to Mr. Ellis's man who builds up the instrument boards. Work of this description where handling of very delicate instruments is concerned should be done in a practically dustproof atmosphere, such as a small room on its own. If a small wooden room was provided for the work of fitting instruments only, all the necessary filing to be done in the shop. I think some expense would be saved in not having to change instruments on chassis and sending them back for repair. If dust is getting in the bearings and air gap causing sticking of the needle during assembly on production, | ||
