To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EFC. c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} c. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Ry. ORIGINAL EFC2/AM 3.11.29. X.7655. S.S. SEQUENCE STARTER UNITS. X7655 BENCH ENDURANCE TEST. We have completed an endurance test of S.S. starter apparatus on our bench rig, more particularly for the purpose of observing the electrical endurance of the units, as engine conditions are only approximately reproduced on this special crankcase rig. One exception however, should be stated and that is the use of a main motor armature return spring of the "Y" type of slightly higher rate than the present standard, and referred to at some length in our last report EFC1/ADL 2.10.29 in which report reference was also made to the automatic push button operation which rendered possible the endurance test, the results of which are now being reported. Still referring for a moment to this "Y" spring, we have now under experimental observation, in the experimental and Test depts, about 20 of these springs, and all reports so far are very favourable in comparison with the present standard "Z" spring. Standardisation will not be effected until there is complete evidence that these are better than the present standard in all circumstances of operation. | ||
