RADICON WORM REDUCERS
(REGD. DESIGN : PATENT Nos. 408,799 AND 409,883)
Type “RHU”

SPECIFICATION
THIS type of "Radicon" Worm Reducer is designed to provide an efficient, silent and exceptionally compact drive for horizontal shafts at right angles, with ratios between approximately 5 to 1 and 60 to 1. Ratios outside these limits can be arranged where desired.

Gears. The reduction is obtained by "David Brown" patent worm gears. The worm, integral with its shaft and proportioned to combine efficiency with strength, is of special quality case-hardening steel, the worm threads being generated, ground and polished. The worm wheel consists of a TAURUS bronze centrifugally cast rim of substantial section shrunk and pinned, or bolted, to a rigid cast iron centre. The teeth are accurately generated to ensure correct tooth contact, quiet running and high load-carrying capacity.

Cooling is effected by a fan*—attached to an extension of the worm shaft and designed to operate in both directions of rotation—which directs cold air over longitudinal ribs on the casing in the immediate neighbourhood of the worm. The upper half of the casing is provided with vertical ribs to assist cooling by convection.

Bearings and Shafts. The worm and wheel shafts are carried on ball or roller bearings throughout, accurately fitted, continuously lubricated and requiring no attention or adjustment. Radial and thrust loads are taken by radial ball bearings. Whilst the bearings have a substantial margin for dealing with overhung loads, full details should always be given so that we can consider an additional roller bearing and a wheelshaft in heat-treated nickel-chrome steel where necessary. Both high and low speed shaft extensions are key-wayed. Up to, and including, the 12" unit, feather keyways are provided as illustrated above. Above this size, open-ended keyways are used as shown on the drawing overleaf.

Lubrication is complete and automatic, by oil only, no greasing being necessary. Oil bath lubrication is provided for the worm and wormshaft bearings and flingers on the wormshaft supply additional oil to the wheel teeth, whilst oil transferred from the worm wheel circulates through the wheel shaft bearings. A drain plug, combined filler cap, breather and inspection cover are supplied.

The casing, oil-tight and dust-proof, is of cast iron, accurately bored and ground on the joint faces between the top and bottom halves. Lifting lugs are provided in the larger sizes.

Bedplates and holding-down bolts together with rigid, flexible or centrifugal couplings, are furnished when required. It is recommended that when gears and motors are to be mounted on combination bedplates, the motors should be sent to our works for mounting, lining up and dowelling.
