Form 2040 10m 7-34 THE CLEVELAND GRAPHITE BRONZE CO. TO: B. F.{Mr Friese} Hopkins FROM: J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} V.{VIENNA} O.{Mr Oldham} Palm DATE: Jan. 5, 1938. SUBJECT: BRAKE SERVO LININGS FOR ROLLS ROYCE LTD. Referring to their letter of November 18th with attached blue print GW-1024, the brake lining shown on their print would have to be made of powdered metal, as the diameter of 4-3/4" precludes the using of Clevite, of which we can only manufacture up to a width of 3-7/8". Concerning the use of powdered metal for brake linings, it is a question whether it will perform under high unit pressures without fading. In order for us to determine whether or not this material would be suitable for such purpose, we should have definite information as to the maximum unit pressure, rubbing speed and coefficient of friction required. On receipt of this information from England, we should be able to determine the advisability of preparing samples as requested in Mr. Robotham's letter of November 18th.
