RE FRACTURED ROAD SPRING.

Analysis.

Carbon .72
Manganese .42
Chromium .57
Phosphorus .037
Silicon .50 (approx).

The Brinell hardness was found to vary considerably on opposite sides of the leaf; thus close to the point of fracture it was 404 on one side and 477 on the other. The Brinell hardness fell off rapidly towards the end.

The fracture was very crystalline as one might expect from the high carbon in the material; it was also irregular as if the hardening had not been satisfactory.
