X.985 X.4305 RE IMPROVEMENTS TO MEET LOWER GRADE OF PETROL. X.3456 With reference to the 40/50 H.P. I would like to impress upon you the extreme urgency of giving every attention possible to the above modification on our present 40/50 H.P. chassis, and to study the desirability of offering to make this modification, if we are thoroughly satisfied with it, a standard fitting that can be attached to cars already in existance, at a fixed sum:- (1) A simple and effective hot spot modification to the induction pipe. (2) Hand operated louvres in front of radiator with dashboard thermometer as guide. (3) Fitting of pilot jet so as to give more continuous running at starting, to take the place of the primer. Every effort should be made to get these three modifications on the chassis about to be delivered. I have heard from Mr. Johnson that the Springfield works had found that a pipe within the induction pipe, heated by the exhaust, made a definite improvement in the carburation. Unless my understanding of it is incorrect, because we say that such a scheme would not be very effective, because we had the impression that the heat must occur at, or before the centre of the trunk of induction manifold.
