FUELS TO A.M. SPECIFICATION NOS. 224 & 230 -
WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE EXISTING & POSSIBLE INCREASED F.S. GOSHAWK RATINGS.

Two fuels to specifications DTD.224 & 230 have recently been issued by the Air Ministry, the former to replace DTD.134 in the Service from October next.

Appended to this report are analyses of samples from batches of the respective types. Whilst full details of the specification are not yet to hand, the A.M. have laid down the most vital point i.e. the octane rating which for DTD.224 is specified to be 77 and for DTD.230 to be 87. Furthermore it is stipulated that the former fuel shall contain no TEL.

The octane ratings referred to are obtained on a C.F.R. test engine generally in accordance with the American Motor Method of Testing - actual details of the Air Ministry test are as follows. -

C.F.R. Engine.
900 R.P.M.
212°F.{Mr Friese} Jacket temperature.
260°F.{Mr Friese} Mixture Temperature.

TESTS CARRIED OUT.

The standard Kestrel V engine No.25 was used for the tests, the conditions of running being -
Dick's P.4 Oil (except for the increased rating tests which were done on Castor P.2.)
K.L.G. VB/1 spark plugs.
Evaporative cooling.

In the case of the Kestrel ratings full comparative tests were made against DTD.134, whilst for the Goshawk position the tests taken were regarded as absolute, there being no appreciable difference between the F.S. Goshawk and Kestrel V from a detonation standpoint.
