X.4238 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to BN.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} c. to E.O. DeA/LG6.4.21. X.3588 RE GOSHAWK 1 & 11 SILENCER. X.4238 We send herewith drawings of the Silencer and Exhaust System revised in accordance with Mr. Elliott's E2/G9.3.21. N.sch. 685 shews the system of Goshawk 1 with the reduced diameter of pipes, but retaining the original exhaust manifold, because in this engine the ports are on opposite sides. N.sch. 683 shews the manifold with the reduced diameter of pipe. This scheme shews one of the methods of carrying heat from the exhaust manifold to the hot spot on the induction pipe, but there have been other schemes submitted which may be preferred, and could be substituted for this, if desired. N.sch. 686 shews the modified silencer for both Goshawk 1 and 11. N.sch. 684 shews the modified support and N.sch.814 shews the general arrangement of the exhaust system on Gos:11. With reference to this we have thought that if the silencer was supported as shewn, it might not be necessary to support the swan-neck pipe. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
