We saw Mr Buxton, Fraser, chassis designer for Chevrolet and also had lunch on a their affairs & problems. We discussed (1) Thorough ventilation of the crankcase is important to prevent down acid fumes. They all said on weather or in V.12 much has been tested & that the sulphuric acid would account for the valve condition, little valve failures and (if this was bad) the abnormal timing chain wear. (2) Tests done at Chevrolet have shown wear was at very high oil temperatures up to 300 F and SAE 30 or even 20 oils are which lubricate down the thin oil is worn. They say in a warm car & from this point are very clear on results & the oil does not help lubrication. Although on crankcases in ignorance. Rather. On oil they recommend its use. SAE 30 or thinner for winter. & Fraser. Their test on V.12 oil temperature is pretty constant (125 F). | ||
