Dear Sirs,

MATERIAL FOR BRAKE DRUMS.

With reference to your letter of the 18th. ult. we note with interest that you are not finding it necessary so far as the general run of your business is concerned to continue with the use of the high frequency furnace as a means of producing your alloy. We are therefore assuming that you have succeeded in utilising a cupola as a means of production, possibly with a fore-hearth as a more economic means of production of your special iron, but before we can make a change it is necessary that we should carry out sufficient experimental work with drums made in the new way to satisfy ourselves as to its general characteristics being the same as the material produced by the use of the high frequency furnace with equal results, so far as wear and tear are concerned. With this object in view we have instructed our Order Office to order up some experimental drums for both of our chassis, cast by your latest process.

From the report which you kindly enclosed with your letter, it would appear that results are equally good, that is, so far as physical tests are concerned, and providing that the cupola is well controlled, one does not see any reason why similar results should not be obtained by this process as by the high frequency method.

Personally, as a purely technical man I am not very much concerned with price, this being a function of the
