X46175 26th. Feb. 1929. EFC1/LG. Messrs. Peto & Radford, 50, Grosvenor Gardens, S.W.1. Dear Sirs, RE. CRACKING OF DAGENITE CELLS. With further reference to the 'sandwich' batteries which we have been testing and concerning failures of cells of which we have previously written you, please find quoted below my assistant's reports JC.135 of 17.10.28 and JC.151 of 20.2.29. which will probably be of interest to you :- JC.135. 17.10.28. Re. Leakage of P. & R.{Sir Henry Royce} Cell in S.V. Battery (177) One P. & R.{Sir Henry Royce} cell in this battery was found to be leaking, a small crack was found in the side of the case. This was probably a weak spot in the moulding made worse by the stretching of the positive plates putting a tension on the cell case. It should be noted that this is the first P. & R.{Sir Henry Royce} Dagenite cell we have had to leak in this Dept. The cell was in good condition but the positive plates were broken in removal from the cell case. JC.151. 20.2.29. Re. Leaking P. & R.{Sir Henry Royce} Cell in S.I. Battery. A P. & R.{Sir Henry Royce} Dagenite cell in this battery commenced to leak after running 32,544 miles. The battery was removed from the car and the cell was replaced with a sound one. The condition of the cell as far as could be seen was good and very little sediment had collected. The crack was about 2" from the top of the case but this extended itself on withdrawing the plates.
