To Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/ACL. c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} X5040 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/ACL.1/MJ.31.12.29. PISTON RINGS - STD. 'CHINA' ENGINE. We are anxious to try some Perfect Circle type oil scraper rings on the Std. type 'China' pistons, similar to that shewn in diagram 'B' on Lec.2577. We think, however, that the Perrfect Circle ring should be deeper on this diagram. The other difference would be that we should use it on the Std. five ring piston, and not on a four ring piston as shewn on Lec.2577. We should, therefore, like a design for modification of the Std. piston, and design of Perfect Circle ring, to test out on one of our experimental cars. Will you please instruct a set of pistons and rings for this experiment. We frequently get cars returned to the Repair Dept., for over-oiling troubles which often means new pistons, rings and lapped cylinders. Aero engine experience has shewn us that we can deal with most of these troubles by means of the perfect Circle type ring. It would also be useful to have a design of ring - Perfect Circle type- to fit existing grooves, both on the large and small bore 20's with the necessary piston modification - holes at bottom of ring groove - so that we could apply this remedy in cases of over-oiling.
