GLIDER WINCH FOR THE R.A.F.
We were approached by the R.A.F. to see if we could help them with a releasing gear for some glider work they were undertaking at Ringway aerodrome.
They directed their enquiries to Rolls-Royce principally because the Phantom III is the only car engine giving sufficient power for their requirements.
They were not very clear as to exactly what form this launching gear should take, and so we borrowed a winch from the Lancashire Gliding Club, put it into running order and loaned it to Ringway.
They have now done sufficient tests to produce a specification for a launching gear and asked us to go ahead and do the necessary design work, and also to supply a Ph.III engine as the power plant.
We have an experimental Ph.III engine which we think could usefully be allocated to this job.
We have been asked by the Air Ministry to submit a price for this, but cannot do this until we have made some designs.
Unless we hear to the contrary, we shall go ahead with the work as and when we get the opportunity. At the moment, however, with gun installation work, tanks and cars, our depleted staff have rather more work than they can handle.
