20 H.P. CHASSIS.

C.J. wishes me to write you concerning the question of improvement required on the 20 h.p. chassis.

In R3/M9.5.25 it is stated that "there is little now to do to the 20 h.p. which seems satisfactory."

There are, however, two important features for criticism which are more or less apparent on every 20 h.p. chassis, and which it is known give very considerable trouble in the Works to reduce to a point where they can be considered as reasonably good.

These two features are :

(a) A general roughness or fussiness of the engine which I can best describe as "thrashing", between 18 and 30 m.p.h.

(b) The vibration set up from the Exhaust system and the boom of the exhaust.

I know you are thoroughly aware of both of these items, but in order that we may know the present situation regarding them, would you please advise us whether you have any definite modifications coming through to ameliorate these conditions.

If the matter has not reached that stage, have you any definite experiments in hand to determine what modifications, if any, are required, and is 'R' aware that we consider both of these matters as serious?

CWB.
