Clan file. To BJJ. from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}11/MH.{M. Huckerby}12.3.40. "CLAN" EXPERIMENTAL. (UNIT TEST BEDS). In accordance with the re-arranged layout, the Unit Test House now occupies a position at a corner of the building. We can make use of this new position to arrange the test bed layout to better advantage. This is shown on our layout Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}112. There are certain points on which you may be able to improve, such as petrol tanks in relation to exhaust silencers. Our main interests in this connection are that pipes of any description should be as short as possible, and on our arrange-ment we have been able to allocate the long exhaust pipe to the bed on which we expect to do least running. The position of the "universal-bed" is important, as accommodation has to be made for special water cooling test tackle (existing) immediately between the brake and the store-rack as shown on our drawing. Further to this universal bed; we wish to test the new B.40 engine which is about to be built, and we should be glad if Horton could check over the tackle available at the present time and confirm that the bed as laid down in No.5 test house is suitable, etc. Re trenches; these should have gradual slopes to the drains, and should be "baffled" as those in No.5. test house. We have shown windows on our print, and we would like consideration to be given to this point. Overhead cranes are existing (4 off) but the new arrangement of engines may allow a common girder and crane to serve two beds, etc. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C.
