best load being 8 lbs. measured at the end of the long
arm. The effect of soaking in oil is to provide a more
constant slipping load.

When setting the load on dampers it is necessary
to reproduce as nearly as possible the conditions existing
when in position on the engine. A distance piece 'A'
equal in thickness to the lug on the crankcase should be
used and the two arms bolted up to it, the bolt 'B' must
also be tight.

The existing spring and centre bolt give the
correct loading. The Cotton 'A' fabrics are the same
thickness as used on servos and should not be any more
costly than Ferodo.

With this load of 8 lbs. torque reaction vibrations
are not more prominent than with the present standard
Ferodo friction surface. Apart from damping out the 48
to 56 M.P.H. period (top gear) the remaining engine boom
periods appear to be less, particularly on retard.

We propose to standardise Cotton 'A' fabrics for
torque reaction dampers and are running them 10,000 miles
on 18-G4. This applies only to 20/25 HP. cars with diabolo
rubber rear engine mounting.
