the brakes are applied normally. With the damping springs on the drums, there are no squeaks at all. That is with the device fitted on the trailing shoe only. We have since designed and tried one on the leading shoe which is simpler in operation and quite as effective, and can be applied to both trailing and leading shoes. The idea is to always have a pressure on the forward edge of the leading shoe, as squeaks are caused by a very slight difference in wear on the front edge, which is sufficient to cause vibrations.
We are convinced that it will overcome the present trouble which is experienced, and does away with the unsightly damping segments which have only a damping effect and do not get at the root of the trouble. The design, as far as I know, is original and is the outcome of investigation of brake squeaks. I shall be very pleased if you will please treat these as being private.
