-2- wonderful. Last year the 3½ litre Bentley did this all in 1st speed, flat out at 18 m.p.h. PIII did it all in at times 2,3, & 4 speed. The journey for the day being over 200 miles in 6½ hrs. car gave no trouble. I had changed oil and filters at Salsburgh. The day was exceptionally hot, the water temperature rose once, only to just over 90 deg. in fact she has kept fairly cool throughout and I should think I have only put in half a gallon water since we left. Oil consumption is fairly high but I should say it is reasonable in accordance with the speed and climbing attained. Petrol consumption has improved from 7 m.p.g. to 10 after several adjustments made to the idling jets, owing to the different grades of petrol used. The front suspension no doubt is a wonderful idea, as in some parts the roads are nothing short of awful, in fact out here in Dalmatia you can only term them as ox cart tracks, yet one does not feel anything, the only danger being, one is likely to travel much too fast. Brakes are very good indeed and quite capable of coping with the speed attained and descent of mountains. Several people out here of repute have ridden in the car, and expressed their amazement, particularly H.R.H. Prince Regent Paul, who I am pleased to say will require one in the near future, but I will explain that to you later. H.R.H. The Duke of Kent is very pleased with it, especially now that he is much more accustomed to it. I am sorry I have not written to you before, but I thought I would wait until we started on our return journey, which commences on the 8th Sept. and I expect to be in London about the 16th and I hope then to let you have the car back for inspection with luck. If you think you could possibly send me another Petrol Pump to be addressed to me c/o H.R.H. Duke of Kent, at the Continental Hotel, Munich, I shall be there on the 14th Sept. We return by the same route as before mentioned, so hope we can get over all right. As far as I am concerned and for the benefit of Rolls Royce, I am doing all I can to make this trip a success. Sgd. F.W.Field. P.S. Tappets I find need checking over and adjusting fairly often. | ||
