-4- General. Unit testing in this manner will probably enable us to dispense with most of our investigation of troubles from these parts at present carried out while on the chassis. At the same time the engine has a very decided effect on the gear box, so much so that a gear box which may be passed while on the bench will be thrown out when on the chassis. This would apparently suggest that the engines and gear boxes should be tested together in a frame, but I do not think so. If we find that a gear box with a certain standard of excellence when on the bench is affected in a certain manner by the engine so that the box is not good when in the chassis, then we should investigate that trouble experimentally until we can say definitely what state of engine and gear box is required on the bench to give a certain result when in the chassis and coupled together. The axle is more of a separate unit and is consequently not affected by the rest of the chassis to any extent and unit testing for this part does not apparently present any great difficulty. | ||
