April 30th.1915. Re Leaky Radiators Referring to the crinkled type of radiator which is failing on the road during the severe war service, I think it would be quite worth while if we tested one of these radiators with stiff side plates of German silver or brass attached as securely as possible, to both the upper and the lower tank. Such a stiff plate would be bent in the channel section as the present plate is, but at a convenient place near the bottom just above the frame, we should fit a casting to form a trunnion with the spread out base, hollow and as light as possible, but which you could fit in the pedestal sitting on the top of the frame. This arrangement would relieve the crinkles of the whole of the load, and since they will not stand much load, they might be very suitable for providing the necessary deflection for the varying temperature between the side plate suggested and themselves. You will notice that the base with this scheme will be very wide, so that the control of the weight of the water in the upper tank should be first rate. Such an arrangement ought to be tried with a steam separator upper tank, which type of radiator is supposed to work with less water than the usual type because in the event of boiling, there should be no loss of water, only of steam.
