[ c. to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} ] Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}5/JH. 4th. April, 1941. Vickers Supermarine Ltd., Hursley Park, Winchester. For the attention of J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Smith Esq. Dear Sirs, When last we called on you (Messrs. Robotham and Evernden) we shewed you a wooden model of our 1/2" machine gun, and you very kindly sent a print No. B.4562 of a stirrup mounting for the Browning in the Spitfire. We have arranged to use almost an identical stirrup for our gun. We hope in a few days to have one of our guns in number 1 bay of a Spitfire wing, and are engaged in making a suitable ammunition box. It would help us immensely and save a lot of time if we could have a look at the design for the ammunition box for the 1/2" Browning the Spitfire Wing. As you helped us with the mounting, we wondered whether you would be agreeable to sending us a print of the ammunition box and chute. At the moment when time is so important we feel loathe to pioneer alone over territory covered by someone else, unless it is unavoidable. We would, therefore, be very grateful to you for any help which you may feel you can give us in connection with the design of this ammunition box. Very shortly we shall have the gun in the wing and firing when we would welcome you at Derby to witness the tests. Yours faithfully, H.I.F.Evernden, Chief of Design, Gun Installation Section for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. P.S. No.1 bay is next to the fuselage. | ||
