X.3587 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to CJ. c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} E1/M6.9.23. GOSHAWK 11. RR: BIJUR STARTING PINION. X.3587 We send you herewith drawing No.Lec.1759 shewing how a Bijur starting pinion can be applied to the first series of Goshawks without alteration to the motor spindle or to the crankcase. A complete new pinion and threaded sleeve is slipped on to the motor spindle and a new end cover and ball bearing fitted for steadying the tail end of the spindle. This design incorporates a buffer spring for giving a grauated increase of friction on the cork washer, commencing from a position when the pinion teeth are just effectively engaged with the flywheel and having a set up effect in the initial position. It is hoped that this will be an improvement over the existing Bijur as regards lessening the shock of starting. Should this be so it will be necessary to apply this advantage to future production. Scheme Lec.1759 should be tested out at the earliest possible moment as the intention is to fit this improved starter pinion to all early Goshawks. We should be glad if Mr. Hives would say if he considers any extra provision is required for cleaning or lubrication, such as an inclined plug hole in the end cover.
