Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 30 JUL 1920 Mr Warwick Exptl. Bill/HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}1220. Laboratory. RECEIVED RE. BENZOL. The matter of gauze filter corrosion was gone into some time back and the results of various tests were shown to Mr Hives. From these it appears that Benzol had considerably more effect on copper gauze in the presence of water than Petrol. Further the percentage of sulphur in the Benzol was indicated to be related to the effect on the gauze. We think that friction due to the passage of the spirit through the gauze accentuates the trouble, and also the relative amount of water and its reaction (acid or alkaline). With respect to the sulphur percentage found in three samples, we may mention that that produced in the Coppee Coke Plant contained .45%, sample from the Glico National Benzol .28%, sample from Carless Capel .26%. These may be taken as representative of Benzol available in the market, the Benzol Association permit up to .4%. Further tests are being done on these three Benzols mixed with Petrol to the extent of 20%. I believe that Monel metal gauzes were found to be more resistant than copper gauzes. I return correspondence herewith. hctb | ||
