RR. and Bentley Headlamps.

With reference to HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/rst.2/Ka.9.3.34, and further to my memo El/HP.5.1.34, we have now given some consideration to rigging up a fog lamp with a view to obtaining a scheme suitable for standardisation on all our cars, and with this end in view we obtained two of the latest fog lamps developed by Messrs. Lucas.

On the Bentley chassis to avoid the collection of too many accessories on the front of the car, we propose to transfer the horns to a position under the apron and to the rear of the number plate where they will be hidden from view, and will not require chromium plated casings with which they are at present fitted. The centre lamp will then be carried by a bracket immediately behind the starter shaft steady, as shown on blueprint RR. Sch.633 attached.

This scheme enables the front of the car to be kept simple for cleaning purposes and avoids too much interference with the air stream passing through the radiator. We have to remember that customers will add further gadgets in the way of badges, to the car, so that unless we can keep it as clean and simple as possible the final result will be very complicated.

We have considered the proposal to use the fog lamp also for a centre lamp scheme which would avoid the necessity for dipping reflectors in the head lamps. There is however an element of doubt as to whether the degree of illumination required for dimmed driving under the worst conditions on a clear night, that is, with wet black road surfaces, will be suitable for the condition when thick fog is encountered, but this is a matter which can be tried out.

We should be glad to have your comments on RR. Sch.633 both in connection with the Bentley, and as applied to our other models.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
