Lightened Radiator for Continental Ph. III.

We wish to lighten the Phantom III radiator for the Continental Phantom III retain reasonably good cooling.

The only possible way of obtaining any substantial reduction in weight that we can think of consists of reducing the matrix size and fitting a gas tight steam valve to the radiator tank outlet loaded to blow off at 10 lbs./sq.in.

In this way the temperature at which water is lost, due to boiling, is raised from 100°C to 115°C.

We also propose to reduce the weight in other ways and attached are schemes Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}198, Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}199, and Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}215, which indicates the modification to be made. Summarised these are :-

(1) Reduced size of matrix (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}198) and alteration to construction of same.

(2) Aero type header tank steam valve fitted (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}198)

(3) Bottom tank made of pressed brass with sheet metal outlet pipe rivetted and sweated to it (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}198).

(4) Cast bottom pipe and tap deleted and tap moved onto pump body (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}215).

(5) Reduced gauge of metal for radiator yoke (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}198)

(6) Present filter cap deleted and filler incorporated with inlet pipe (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}199).

(7) Same method of bracking yoke to be used as on 35-EX car for France (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 182 and 183).

(8) Water outlets from cylinder head to be fitted at ends of heads (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}199) and top water rails deleted.

Top water connections to suit these outlets and the modified radiator.
