EAGLE EPICYCLIC REDUCTION GEAR.
RE SPECIAL ALL GROUND REDUCTION GEAR PINIONS AND WHEELS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ANNULUS.
-------------------------------------------------------

With reference to my doubt as to whether the Works have cut the gears with a standard cutter leaving grinding allowance by hot cutting deep, which would result in grinding away the case hardening at the bottom of the tooth flank, I have had the gear dismantled and examined, and find that correct cutters have been used, and that the gear is perfectly satisfactory and trustworthy.

I am therefore again strongly urging that the Air Ministry should be approached to get consent for this gear to be tried out by Imperial Airways, unless it is possible to get a test here at the Works, which in view of the length of time which has elapsed since the gear was available does not seem possible. It seems a pity that after the gear has been made that it should remain untested, particularly as Imperial Airways have to dismantle after every two hours on account of possible troubles with epicyclic gear.
