| BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM HDY.{William Hardy} X228. HDY{William Hardy}1/M8.10.32. C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RHO. BENSPORT GEARBOX. We send herewith N.sch.3554. which shews minor modifications to this box resulting in the elimination of the hole for assembling the layshaft gear, and simplification of the assembling of the box. It is now intended that when the box is being assembled the synchro mesh sleeve, together with its operating fork and slider shall be in place on the rear half of the box. The reverse gear will be on the layshaft, and the reverse shaft with fork and slider in place in the rear half of the box. The 1st. and 2nd. speed actuating shaft having been moved forward of the reverse gear, permits this shaft to be loosely in place when the front half is assembled. The reverse actuating shaft cannot be in place at this stage, but must be assembled afterwards through the hole in the bottom of the box. We have taken advantage of the moved forward position of the 1st. and 2nd. gear actuating shaft to raise the levers at the lower ends of the shafts and get longer bearings as wellas increased clearance for the assembly of the shafts. We have now to provide a servo drive in this box, and this will lengthen the rear compartment somewhat. Particulars of the teeth of the worm and wheel will be the same as for Peregrine. We shall send the remaining information as soon as possible. HDY.{William Hardy} | ||
