Re Split Aluminium Pistons. CJ17/E.3.11.19

Commander Briggs informed me to-day that Mr.Bentley, who was with the D.F.P. people and was subsequently an Admiralty officer under Commander Briggs, has invented and, he thinks, taken out a patent for split aluminium pistons.

The skirt of the piston is towards its base thickened sufficiently to enable a ring to be fitted on the inside of the piston.

The skirt of the piston is sawn upwards for about 3/4" in 6 places in the circumference.

Commander Briggs has been told by Bentley that this arrangement has eliminated piston knocks and has shown a remarkable saving in oil consumption.

Commander Briggs is doubtful as to whether Bentley has run these pistons sufficiently to be able to ascertain whether the aluminium fatigues to a dangerous extent.
