X.3545 To HY. {Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} from his. c. to EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} c. to or. R.F.C. HS {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 6/LG20.8.20. X.3545 LOW GEARED BACK AXLE. With reference to the standardisation of the lower geared back axle. We received six sets of Gleason cut bevels for this ratio. From those we have been able to obtain, three axles which are quite good for silence. One pair of gears have been condemned and two more we have still to try. We do not recommend, however, that we should order up large quantities at present of gears suitable for low geared axles. We recommend that for a start we should order up 50 sets. This would enable the axle production people to settle definitely what standard of silence can be obtained with these gears. Mr. Royce's wish, is that in the first place, a low geared axle should be fitted to the cars which are going to have heavy bodies. We also consider that cars going to the Colonies or to U.S.A. would benefit more than the English cars with the lower gear. At the same time we think that as soon as we are convinced a quiet axle can be obtained with this ratio, we shall find that the majority of our customers will demand this gear.
