re Marles Steerings.

Referring to the discussion which took place in my office with Mr Maltravers, the following procedure was agreed:-

(1) The batch of 13 cams tested showed variations in centre distance from 0 to 10 thousandths. Mr Maltravers will arrange for the limits on diameter to come within our permissible variation, which is .005 on the centre distance corresponding to .100 adjustment. He will also cut on the shallow or plus diameter side so that the adjustment comes in the most effective position.

(2) With the double roller Mr Maltravers is of the opinion that more correction is necessary on the radius of the hour glass to obtain the requisite clearance at each end of the lock, and this will be applied.

(3) With regard to the cams which we find on production have the tight position out of centre with the ends, Sft.{Mr Swift} will send the box in which one of these cams is fitted, to Messrs. Adamant for them to experiment with revised instructions for setting up, and for correction of the form, if found necessary.

(4) It is agreed that the R.R. cam is of such proportions that it should give minimum distortion during hardening, but Mr Maltravers will send Sft.{Mr Swift} a soft cam to be used as a check-up on hardening distortion.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
