25 HP. FLYWHEEL VIBRATIONS.

We have carried out tests on the bed of a flywheel supported by a double bearing. The length of No.7 bearing was as in a standard engine, the extra one was much shorter but of a larger diameter. The effect of this new bearing is to raise the flywheel period in speed and decrease it in amplitude. The maximum of the vibrations occurs about 1000 R.P.M. higher than with a standard flywheel (mounted in the ordinary way) or 500 R.P.M. higher than with the W.W flywheel. With the extra bearing there is very little difference between the two flywheels. These tests were carried out without a gearbox. If as in former experiments periods occur 300 R.P.M. higher in a car, we expect the effect of this bearing to be to raise the period above speeds obtainable on a car even in the lower gears.
A road test is now being carried out.
