Continental Phantom III Steering.

Our original specification for the side steering tube of the above called for a rigid joint at the rear end as on front end of Wraith tube.

Recent experience on 35-EX and on Wraith indicates that we shall not be able to depart from the flexible joint and we would like the rear S.S. joint on 39-EX to be as standard P.III with details to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}330. This means that the temporary side steering tube can be used. The lower end of the pendulum lever will need slight modification to take a standard P.III ball pin. There will be no means of lubricating the joint from the bigur system but for the time being it will be sufficient if the joint it well packed with grease. Later when one piece box covers to FW.907 are available a bigur oil as now being rig tested by W.Bell can be fitted.

Will you please modify the specification as follows :-

(1) Slightly enlarge taper bore, counterbore and mill slot at lower end of pendulum lever to take standard P.III ball pin.

(2) Use side steering tube as fitted originally.

(3) Plug bigur pipe hole in housing of front joint.

(4) Fit parts to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}330 already existing.
