The leak will then be opened, when, after switching on the current, the effect of a predetermined internal pressure plus the magnetic force of the solenoid exceeds the return spring load, and will close immediately the current flow is interrupted. In this case the leak will not operate when the car is stationary but will do so immediately the damper arm oscillates.

The coil used during these tests permitted the use of an initial return spring load of 5lb with the .030" gap, and 3 1/2lb with the .050" gap, allowing internal pressures on the full area of the valve needle of 900 lb/sq.in. respectively to be reached before interfering with the normal operation of the valve.

These pressures are approximately equivalent to 300lb and 200lbs static ball pin loads respectively, with a 20/25HP rear lever.

The current required to operate this experimental coil was 0.72 amps, and was supplied by a 12 volt car accumulator.
