205. To EY. Copy to Dr. HFG. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Bu/Std. E/Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/MN.12.2.37. Widney Unbroken Line Top Hinge - Bentley. We have already issued to you LeC.5486 showing the Widney unbroken line top bonnet hinge type H.34. We have now received two sample hinges from Messrs.Hallam, Sleigh & Cheston made from a modern edition of type H.34 and shown on their blueprint of H.1021 herewith. The only difference in section between this hinge and that shown on their prints H.22 and H.23/34 is that the shape of the hinge has been modified in order that the turnover or fold of both the left and righthand bonnet panels has been made identical. On the H.34 type this was not so. We have received from Messrs.Hallam, Sleigh & Cheston two hinges which can be used on a Bentley bonnet. They are not exactly to the hinge shown on LeC.5486 because they wish us to use a portion of a standard Morris and Wolseley hinge. We show the hinge as supplied to us on LeC.5518 herewith and it is for this hinge that bonnet details should be prepared. The bonnet eye on the radiator and the bonnet fixing on the dashboard are unaltered from LeC.5486. When the hinge reaches a production state, if ever, the hinges will be lengthened as shown dotted and cut off on the chamfer so as to give a little more room for bonnet attachment. This will enable you to go ahead and give the Expl. Dept. enough information for them to fit up a couple of Bentley cars with this bonnet hinge. We suggest that one bonnet should be made with steel top and side panels .036" thick, and the other with aluminium top and side panels .064" thick. It is impossible to use aluminium or in fact any metal thicker than .064" with this hinge. Whilst this may appear to be very thin in aluminium, we are told that Messrs. Armstrong Siddeley have been using this hinge for several years with an aluminium bonnet .064 thick. It will be necessary to fix up with the Expl. Dept. on which cars they propose to fit these bonnets in order that the type of dashboard may be made to correspond. Att:LeC.5518,H.1021. Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} | ||
