DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} ) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ) (At Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) Copy to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} X5310 SECRET JAPAN GEARBOX. I have received the servo and speedometer drives and I cannot see any means of simplifying or improving, but I have not been able to give them much time: I trust to DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/HDY{William Hardy}'s and Work's criticisms. The helical gears seem very much better for the improvements and I think are as good as we know how. Also the reverse gears - I am very satisfied that we decided on this scheme. I prefer the short serrations (not the alternative). Milling cutters of this type generally are better of small dia. so that I should think the serrations could be longer if one wished, but probably calculations would shew that they are much stronger than the pinion teeth. The operating sliders etc (as schemed for P.2. double top) are a great improvement compared with any of our present schemes. I think this box could go ahead by Mr. Bailey's dept. as quickly as possible so as to get out of the way of other work. Our P. 2. box is extremely good on gears: very different to most of even the good cars one hears on the roads in France. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
