Dear Devereux,

With reference to Mr. Sanders' letter of the 16th December concerning the A.E. Co.,Ltd., we have, as I believe you know, been endeavouring to get the R.R. bearing metal established as a big-end bearing before getting people to run it as a main bearing.

We note from A.E. Ltd. that they are asking for main bearings only, and they are proposing to run them in conjunction with lead bronze. We do not like mixing R.R. bearing metal with lead bronze, because lead bronze requires so much more clearance that the R.R. bearings will have to do all the work.

We find that much better results are obtained if R.R. alloy is used on the heavily loaded bearings and white metal on the others.

In view of these facts, we should like Mr. Matthews to go down to the A.E. Co. and discuss the problem with them. If he is satisfied that the R.R. main bearings have a good chance of successfully doing the job we shall be willing to make an exception and supply these in order to get some more experience.

We are writing to the A.E. Co. (see attached) to arrange a meeting, and will let you know the date fixed so that your Representative can attend if you so desire.
