'SS{S. Smith}' ENGINE MOUNTING.

We are now working exclusively on the last 10% of this movement only i.e. with the four torsionally stiff rubber engine feet. We have tried the 40/50 cross member in front of the radiator on the SS.{S. Smith} We could not appreciate any reduction in the radiator movement at the critical speed. We tried slackening off the bolts securing the subframe but could detect no increase in the front end steadiness. We tried varying the rigidity of the attachment between the scuttle and the dash i.e. the semi isolation scheme. Increased rigidity appeared to emphasise the booming of the body without having much effect on the radiator oscillations.

We removed the tie rods. We consider that we could appreciate a slight improvement. We have confirmed that low tyre pressures do not produce high speed wobbles.

We fitted a Phantom front half silencer to the SS.{S. Smith} exhaust system. This reduced the apparent roughness of the engine considerably and the exhaust booms in the body quite 50%. There are still one or two exhaust periods in the body, however. We are working on these.
