Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/LG. 18th February, 1924 (Monday). Messrs Rolls-Royce Limited, Nightingale Road, DERBY. Dear Sirs, We have pleasure in acknowledging the receipt of your letter of the 15th inst., The order you refer to is not yet to hand. We note that the discs in Ferodo Fibre are to work under light unit pressure and at low speeds, and if the degree of heat generated by the friction surfaces is not higher than say 200° Fahr. the material, Ferodo Fibre, will be found to give excellent service, with a high coefficient of friction and a very low rate of wear. It can be held by rivets equally as well as Ferodo Bonded Asbestos, but the rivet heads should be countersunk so as to be well clear of the opposite metal surface, otherwise the friction heat in the rivet may char the portion of the lining immediately surrounding it. Ferodo Fibre is very largely used for the brakes of large power plants where the degree of heat is low, but is not admissible for automobile brakes. It will stand temperatures up to 280° Fahr, but this is too high for the safe working limit, when this material begins to char at that stage. fn. Yours faithfully, FERODO LIMITED Chief Engineer. | ||
