BYB/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 28.4.26.

ROAD WHEELS FITTED WITH WELL-BASE RIMS.

Referring to Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}1/NJ.24.3.26. and Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}13/NJ.19.4.26. we have been closely in touch with Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} since the original memo referred to was received, and the position is as follows:-

1. 20 HP. Chassis.

We have completed 7000 out of the 10,000 miles running in France, and a standardization sheet will be issued shortly, but it is not safe at the moment to burn our boats, and I am therefore proposing to order a month's further supply covering all our requirements likely to occur during the month, of S.S. type wheels.

2. 40/50 HP. Chassis.

The position of the 40/50 is not quite so clear. It is certain that R.{Sir Henry Royce} will push for well-base rims, and low pressure tyres immediately he returns, with the object of improving the riding comfort of the car, and in my opinion he will let nothing stand in his way.

The points which stand in the way of the well-base rim on the 40/50, are at the moment mainly due to shock dampers. These we feel fairly safe about, but in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' opinion it will be another six weeks at least before we shall be able to commit ourselves to a standardization sheet on shock dampers, and since on this chassis there is a possibility of high speed wobbles being set up unless shock dampers are fitted, it will be necessary for us to bring in the well-base rims and hydraulic shock dampers together, but it is not necessary for us to await the perfecting of the hydraulic shock damper for the rear part of the chassis, as this is not essential to the well-base problem.

In view of the foregoing, we should cover a month ahead of our present commitments on S.S. tyres for the 40/50. which will bring us, according to your remarks, roughly to the 27th June.

In the case of the 20 HP. chassis, it does not appear to have anything like the same tendency to set up Con.
